Our Story - The Dog Retreat

Welcome to The Dog Retreat!

A concept built for and by dog-lovers. We are Michelle and Pim, both originally from The Netherlands and living in Dubai since 2019. Having been raised with dogs in the family, the inevitable thing was to have a little doggie ourselves, as a way to create a home away from home! We are the happy parents of two mini-poodles, Lion and Simba, who both have completely different characters and personal needs. Due to this, we have experienced first-hand how stressful and exhausting doggy daycare/boarding can be. We believe there is room for a different approach.

Our concept focuses on the needs of each individual dog. How do we do this? By creating a personalized program for our beloved guests, based on their needs and requirements. We understand that every dog requires a different approach; some cannot get enough playtime with their furry friends, while others prefer to be cuddled as much as possible or like to be more to themselves. Our personalized services cover all needs within this spectrum and beyond.

Our team comprises of dedicated pet care experts who share a unified goal; to provide your pet with a safe, comfortable and joyful experience. Each member of the staff is trained to meet the unique needs of our canine guests, ensuring they receive the right personalized care and attention.

At our premises, lit by natural daylight, we offer 5 different areas: 3 play areas, a dog lounge/cuddle room and a project room. We have thoughtfully designed every corner of our unique venue to give your pooch the best possible experience.

Lion, (May 4, 2022)

We got Lion from one of the puppy stores in Dubai. He was initially bought by a guy who decided to leave him home alone from day one, at three months old. Twelve hours a day without any attention. After one week, the security pushed him to get rid of the dog as he kept crying and causing problems for the other residents. He returned Lion to the store. Needless to say, he started showing signs of separation anxiety right after we brought him into our family. That’s when we became VIP clients at a daycare facility in Dubai, since we weren’t comfortable leaving him alone at home for a few hours, considering his prior traumatic experience.

Simba, (May 2022)

In September 2023 we received a call from Stray Dogs Center with the question if we were able to foster a mini-Poodle, who was tragically dumped on the streets in the Dubai heat. As we fostered for SDC before, we were more than happy to lend a hand. The next day we decided to pop by and meet the little boy. From that moment it seemed like a match made in heaven! Until the evening arrived; Lion was used to sleeping in our bedroom. However, Simba was so distressed and looking for real love that he wanted to be there too! This did not go well with Lion, as you can imagine. So, we decided to put Simba in a huge crate for the night. We closed the door and Simba started to cry, which almost literally broke our hearts. Then the unimaginable happened: Lion jumped from the bed, started scratching the door and wanted to comfort Simba. We opened the door and from that moment we had 2 brothers loving and respecting each other’s space and needs - who are now inseparable. This was the start of our adventure; 2 dogs with very specific needs, both complete different in personality and behaviour and both with their own traumatic experience.
